What is a UPRN and why does it matter?

A Unique Property Reference Number helps different systems refer to the same address or location consistently.

A UPRN is a numeric identifier assigned to an addressable location in Great Britain. Unlike a written address—which might be formatted or abbreviated in several ways—the identifier is intended to remain a consistent reference.

What can a UPRN help with?

It can help organisations match information about the correct property across datasets and services. This is useful when addresses contain variations, flats or units, property names, or changes in presentation.

Is it the same as a title number?

No. A UPRN identifies an addressable location. An HM Land Registry title number identifies a registered legal title. Their boundaries and relationships are not necessarily one-to-one, so the two references should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does recording a UPRN prove ownership?

No. A UPRN does not establish who owns a property, verify identity or replace official Land Registry information.

Always check important property information against the appropriate official source or qualified professional. A value entered into a personal home record is not formally verified unless that is explicitly stated with a source.

Why does Dwellry include it?

Recording the UPRN helps make a Dwellry property record more structured and portable. It also prepares the record for future standards mapping and data exchange without claiming accreditation or official verification.

Where can homeowners look for it?

UPRNs may appear in local-authority or property-related services. Use an authoritative address lookup and check that the selected address exactly matches the intended property before recording the number.
